Fear, Future, Function | 16 November 2025

In today’s message, Pastor David shares the well-known story in Luke 5 where Jesus steps into the everyday world of tired fishermen and transforms an ordinary morning into a life-changing moment. He paints the scene vividly: it’s early, the fishermen are exhausted, cold, and discouraged after an entire night of catching absolutely nothing. They’re cleaning empty nets—a perfect picture of frustration, wasted effort, and the kind of disappointment many of us know all too well.

Into this moment, Jesus arrives. Pastor David highlights how powerful this is: Jesus steps onto their shore—right into their disappointment—and asks Peter to push the boat out a little. After teaching the crowd, Jesus gives Peter a surprising instruction: “Put out into deep water and let down the nets.” Even though Peter is worn out and confused, he responds with the key phrase: “But because You say so…”

What happens next is the miracle we all remember—the nets fill until they’re breaking, and both boats nearly sink under the weight of the catch. But Pastor David points out that the true miracle isn’t the fish. The real miracle happens in Peter’s heart. Confronted with Jesus’ power and holiness, Peter falls to his knees and confesses, “I am a sinful man.” And in response, Jesus doesn’t scold or shame him—He simply says, Don’t be afraid. From now on, you will fish for people.”

Drawing from John 14:27 and several other scriptures, he explains why Jesus takes fear so seriously—because fear freezes us. It stops us from stepping forward, steals our confidence, and whispers lies about who we are and what God can do. Whether it’s fear of failure, fear of not being good enough, fear of the future, or fear of what people think, Pastor David reminds us that Jesus speaks the same words today that He spoke to Peter: “Do not be afraid.”

Jesus tells Peter, “From now on…”—a simple phrase that marks a turning point. Pastor David encourages us to draw a line in the sand and refuse to let the past dictate our future. Too many of us live life staring into the rear-view mirror, stuck in regret or shame. But Jesus is the Lord of our “from now on.” With Him, a new chapter can start in a single moment.

Finally, Jesus gives Peter purpose: “You will fish for people.” Pastor David reminds us that we are all saved for something. We are called to shine, serve, share Jesus, and help others find hope. Whether through ministries like children’s work, youth, Alpha, or community outreach, our purpose carries eternal weight.

He ends with a simple truth: fear is broken by trusting Jesus, your future is written by Him, your purpose matters, and now is the moment to follow Him with faith.
