1 Timothy 1 – Remember God’s Words | 7 September 2025

Alistair Main introduces a new series on 1 Timothy, inviting everyone to read along and study together throughout the month.

He explains that 1 Timothy is one of Paul’s later letters, written to his younger co-worker Timothy, who was sent to the church in Ephesus. Over time, false teachings and distortions had crept in, and Paul tasked Timothy with restoring order, keeping the gospel central, and guiding the church to be a faithful witness.

Reading from 1 Timothy 1:12–20, Alistair highlights Paul’s personal testimony of grace—once a persecutor of Christians, Paul was shown mercy so that his life could be an example of Christ’s patience. Paul charges Timothy to hold on to faith and a good conscience, reminding him of the prophecies spoken over his life.

Prophecy, he explains, is a Spirit-inspired word that aligns with Scripture, never contradicting it. It carries authority because its source is God, not human imagination. Prophecy can encourage, strengthen, warn, or reveal God’s will, always pointing to Jesus.

He urges the church to weigh prophecies carefully, test them against Scripture, and seek confirmation through wise counsel. Prophetic words are not passive; they should impact how we live, guiding our decisions and strengthening our faith in seasons of waiting, just as Timothy was encouraged to persevere in his calling.

Alistair also emphasises corporate prophecy, reminding the church of words spoken over their community about revival, outreach, and being a light in the town. Even if individuals have not received personal prophecy, they share in the promises spoken over the body of Christ.

Finally, he recalls the prophetic words of Jesus—about the Holy Spirit, the spread of the gospel, His presence in trials, His return, and eternal life. Alistair concludes by urging us to remember, trust, and walk in the words God has spoken
