Psalm 40 – A Big Thank You | 31 August 2025

Jo Sandhu closes “Psalms Month” by focusing on Psalm 40, describing it as a heartfelt “thank you” to God. She begins by explaining that the Psalms speak to every human experience—joy, pain, hope, sin, and deliverance—and provide words for every stage of life.

Jo highlights its central themes: God hears our cries, lifts us from despair, and sets our feet on solid ground. She emphasises that God does not simply hear casually but “inclines His ear,” bending down to listen closely and personally. This active, intimate care shows His deep love for His people.

Jo then reflects on David’s journey in the preceding Psalms, where he wrestles with injustice, guilt, and illness. By Psalm 40, however, David shifts his focus upward in gratitude, remembering who God is and choosing to trust Him. Jo urges us to do the same: look back and recall God’s faithfulness, then look up and rest in His steadfast love.

She explains that in verses 7–8 David looks inward, expressing delight in doing God’s will because His law is written on his heart. Jo shares her personal experience of how God gently changes desires, removing old habits like smoking not by force but by transforming the heart. True worship, she says, is not about rituals or sacrifices but about surrender—offering ourselves to God in relationship rather than empty religion.

In the Psalm, David looks forward with hope, affirming that even in waiting, God is working. Jo highlights that deliverance sometimes requires action—like reaching out to touch the hem of Jesus in faith. She recalls her own moment of surrender, when asking for prayer became the step that broke her chains.

She concludes by inviting us to “cut their ropes,” surrender what holds them back, and trust God fully. Psalm 40, is a great thankyou to God—for lifting us from the pit, giving us a new song, and leading us into freedom and trust.
