Foundations| 03 November 2024

Alistair Main shares with us on the importance of having a strong foundation in life, using the metaphor of building on rock versus sand, as illustrated in the teachings of Jesus. He emphasises that, much like constructing a building or wind turbine, a solid foundation is essential to withstand the challenges of life. Using the Petronas Towers with their deep foundations as an example, Alistair draws a parallel to our spiritual lives, sharing that the deeper our spiritual foundations, the more resilient we become.

He discusses how life’s trials test and strengthen our faith, much like winds battering a tall structure. He explains that building a strong spiritual foundation requires commitment to prayer, giving, fasting, and embracing the values of the Beatitudes. These actions, often performed privately, are essential for deepening our faith and anchoring us spiritually.

He also touches on his personal journey, sharing how he initially pursued shallow foundations like career success and leisure but later found purpose by anchoring his life in Christ. Alistair encourages others who may not have had a Christian upbringing, reassuring them that it’s possible to build a solid foundation later in life, as illustrated by biblical figures like Matthew, Zacchaeus, and Paul.

Alistair concludes by urging us to persevere in our faith and to dig through life’s distractions to establish a firm foundation in God. Through this, we can grow stronger and better equipped to face the challenges of life.
