In this week’s sermon, Pastor Josh concluded a series on the life of Elijah, urging everyone to continue exploring Elijah’s and Elisha’s stories in First and Second Kings. The sermon focused on 1 Kings 19, where Elijah experiences God’s presence not in dramatic manifestations like wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper. This story illustrates how God often moves in ways that defy our expectations.
Pastor Josh shared a personal testimony about feeling God’s call to leave college and volunteer full-time at church. Later, feeling called to Bible College, he faced disappointment when his application was rejected due to insufficient qualifications. This led him to question God’s plan, feeling forgotten and frustrated. Josh related this to how many Christians feel when their expectations aren’t met, emphasizing that faith requires trusting God’s unseen work.
The main message was about the “limitation of expectation”—how our narrow expectations can blind us to God’s broader actions. Highlighting that high but non-specific expectations of God allow us to see His diverse workings. Elijah’s story was used to illustrate how rigid expectations can prevent us from recognizing God’s presence and actions.
The worship included the song “Way Maker,” resonating deeply with the congregation due to its message that God is always working, even when unseen. Pastor Josh encouraged the congregation to have faith that God is at work, despite unmet expectations.
